In celebration of Internship appreciation month, we are spotlighting KPM Franklin’s civil engineering intern, Michael Lemmerman.
Michael began his internship with KPM Franklin in January of 2021 and will be with us through the summer. He works in our Orlando office and has partnered on numerous projects with engineers and industry professionals at all levels. KPM Franklin is dedicated to providing opportunities to for young professionals to learn and grow with career relevant experience, and Michael has been an asset to our team!
What inspired you to pursue this field of study?
I want to make this world a better place and this field is dedicated to improving infrastructure and protecting communities.
What has been your focus during this internship?
I have worked on a little bit of everything thus far from proposals to construction plans to permitting.
What types of projects have you worked on?
I have worked on several commercial projects that include anything from dentist offices to gas stations to golf courses.
How does your experience compliment your studies?
I encounter quite a few topics and concepts from my water resources classes, which is interesting because it’s one thing to learn something from a textbook, but applying it in the field is completely different.
What new trainings/skills have you acquired through your experience?
This is my first experience in an office setting, which has allowed me to build on communication skills through coordination with the engineers. Over the past four months, my AutoCAD skills have increased 200%, at least.
What excites you the most about this industry?
There will always be work and new problems to solve. One of my biggest fears when finding a career was having a repetitive mind-numbing job and I know that won’t be an issue here.
What has been the best part about your internship?
The free doughnuts of course! Besides that, the best part has been learning what all goes into a project from concept to proposal to construction.
Looking ahead to the future, what are your career goals?
I’m anticipating passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam this summer and graduating next spring. Within a couple years, I hope to become a licensed Professional Engineer.
